Gossip Girl; my take: introduction

I have decided to foray away from my usual blogging topics and venture into something else that I have never, ever written. In fact, once upon a time, I would never have dreamed on writing about this series. But trying out new things can be fun, albeit a bit awkward. So, I’m going to put on my [most pleasant] thinking cap on all things metropolitan, and get straight to the point.

So why Gossip Girl? I once said that the series annoy me to no end-and it still does. For one, drama amongst highly bred young adults really don’t interest me. But yes, I do watch it. And the more I follow this series (thank you, Cindi haha) there is a minute, almost invisible connection. And, watching shows with an open mind enables me to slowly break down and analyze. At least you get to use your brain. Why do I still watch this show? As an amateur in this whole GG universe, I admit that I have only read the prequel novel, and am only following the 2nd season as it runs on the local channel now. So this upcoming entries I’m going to blog is plainly through my perspective of the series. If I get some facts wrong, feel free to correct me. (:

GG has a drop-dead gorgeous cast, I will give them that. But that’s not the reason why. Lets admit it, GG has a stunning array of people, and of course a library-worthy stock of personalities. The people make you cringe and stare in awe. As the story suggests, they are gorgeous, beautiful people. And yes they are. They have us in their impeccably groomed fingers. GG ensnares us with characters that might or do bear a significance in our lives. Maybe it’s true. We fall in love with them, and of course, we relate to these characters. Hollywood has made it evident that beautiful people have huge, out-of-the-world problems.

Gossip Girl has the most cliche of story lines, but with an old fashioned plot that holds the audience and never gets old. We have the elite girls in the elite school, the handsome boys that double for more than just eye candy, and also, the few ‘rejects’ that usually come out in their own way and pulls the story together neatly. And sometimes, it would be them that steals the spotlight, eventually, at least. We have: (the main stars, at least.)

  • the winsome, model-esque Serena, the epitome of the all-perfect girl.
  • the coiffed and devious Blair, one who always sought control.
  • Jenny, a girl who is only starting out.
  • the amateur author, Dan.
  • either a very confused or simply one who bottles up many emotions-Chuck
  • and the troubled Nate who steps up a notch by sleeping with a ‘cougar’.

One unique twist to this series is that in GG, there is a narrator. The many endeavors of the main cast are told through a mysterious blogger with the alias of Gossip Girl. She unravels a seedy affair or two with a lilting voice that sometimes bears an advice, or a sardonic mocking edge. In the novelization, Gossip Girl spills all on her blog, where readers flock and leave comments. Nothing is too scandalous for GG; wherever there are canards, she will always be there.

I’m sure it’s not too assuming of me to say that the Gossip Girl books are quite the bestseller. GG would be so thrilled. But I’m not surprised at its success, on paper and on screen. Acts of misconduct has never been so gripping.

The next post on this would be on the characters-I hope to give each of them a page each if possible. Wish me luck. (:

The new Blair Witch Project.

I admit that I don’t know much about that said movie except that it was filmed entirely via hand held. And that it immediately reached cult-status. So, gritty, grungy and raw movies are in right now!

District 9 had a semi grunge effect going on, also hailed as a sleeper hit of 2009. Cindi likes the kid alien. Wikus van der Merwe. There. I wrote his name.

Fook yeah? Absolutely!

Does anyone remember FreakyLinks? That TV series ages ago that could-have-been?

It is rather similar to the Blair Witch Project as well, though with only 13 episodes. Wasn’t all that popular here, but I liked it. So did Jason.

And this morning I happen to spot an article about this movie on Yahoo.

Limited screening only, but I decided to check out the trailer. It has a bit of a home-movie thing going on, with a supernatural twist. Blair Witch in your house. Except that the spook may be a demon.

._.

Sebastian, are you like, attempting to sabotage my head just because I haven’t been paying attention to you? That’s not fair. D: I have homework to do, you see, whereas all you have to do is roam the (densely polluted) countryside and select souls to be devoured. Or whatever it is that you do. Are you the star in Paranormal Activity now?

Haha. See for yourself. Although I’m kinda terrified by the trailer right now.

Heroes. Come.

I’m currently reading up some plot details and what to expect from the upcoming Heroes season, Redemption. Because I need to have something else to look forward apart from hanging onto shows like Breaking the Magician’s Code and a rerun of Chuck. I love Chuck, but I would love to pick off from Season 2, where the episodes were discontinued. And reading about Heroes gives me a good excuse to not make every single post having a reference to Kuroshitsuji. Oh, the fail.

I have a love/hate relationship with Heroes. Because the plot has been spiraling downwards quicker than a crashing airplane, and the fact that sometimes things get too confusing. Maybe that’s just me.

Here’s a snippet from Heroes Television:

One of the big issues we’ll be exploring is how should a person with abilities live his or her life. Should they try to assimilate by hiding their abilities, or should they live more honestly, exposing their powers to the world?

This was always an issue highlighted in movies and this series. How should ’special’ people live their lives? I don’t know how will the general population perceive them. It’s such a taboo thing, and the idea of people with abilities don’t quite agree with most of us.

Claire will be at the forefront of that issue, starting college in Washington, D.C., and trying to discover, as all college kids do, who she really is. But re-adjusting to normal life won’t be easy, especially when Claire is caught in the crossfire of her parent’s divorce and a mysterious suicide on campus.

I suppose Claire Bennet’s life would be what us students might want to expect if we have powers. It’s already tough being a teenager-and now young adult, what not having to deal with this. Having to juggle both normal and her ‘other’ problems must be a real headache for her;  I simply cannot imagine.

Meanwhile, Peter and Nathan are trying to get their lives back on track. Peter is trying to be a hero in the purest sense — saving one life at a time. But that means cutting himself off from friends and family. It’s only when Peter makes a romantic connection with a fascinating new “powerful” woman that he’ll find out that life means staying connected to others. Nathan is discovering new things about himself everyday, mostly due to the fact that he’s actually Sylar.

I watched the trailer for Redemption, and Peter’s way of saving people as said is serving as a paramedic, similar to his previous profession as a nurse. I think Peter is also grappling emotionally within himself, trying to find a balance and trying to understand. The recent events might render him lost and often depressed. I wonder who this mystery woman will be, but it is natural of writers to slip in romance to enlighten things. Nathan, is not Nathan. Haha. So obviously he will come to terms on who he really is.

Matt will have to live with the guilt of what he did to Sylar; making his attempts to live a normal life with his wife and child virtually impossible.

The trailer shows Matt having hallucinations of Sylar, mostly of him demanding his body back. It’s enough to indicate his remorse of what he had inflicted upon Sylar in the previous season. It would be something that he can never shake off until perhaps he encounters Sylar as himself.

Noah Bennet (HRG), with the help of Tracy Strauss, Angela Petrelli and all of our Heroes, is tasked with forming a new COMPANY. But that new organization won’t be concerned with conspiracies and prisons anymore. It will be about people. Finding them. Connecting to them. And figuring out why so many of them have been seduced by another “organization” out there that treats people with abilities in a fascinating, dangerous and potentially deadly new way.

Oho. Another company. I just don’t know why didn’t they think about this in the first place. Only this time there’s competition, with a rogue party that presumably has other kinds of privileges. Judging by the poster below, I can only assume that Hiro, Sylar and Claire will be the main  focuses in the story line. September 21st, people.

Doesnt really show much about the plot, but with Sylar, its all good. 8D

With Sylar, it's all good. 8D
